Successful Medical Billing Business Marketing Strategies:  Build a Booming Business

You are sitting in your home-office.  Your Medical Billing Software has been installed on your computer.  Your Medical Billing Course certificate is framed and looks really nice on your wall.  As you try to imagine your office "humming" with activity (phone ringing, printer spitting out CMS 1500 forms, software gathering claim data to submit electronically) you ask yourself, "What can I do to make this a reality?"  And more to the point, "How do I get clients for my medical billing business?"

1.  Fake It Until You Make It
This is a psychological aspect of building your medical billing business that should not be skipped!  It is very similar to envisioning yourself at your desired weight when you are in the process of losing weight.  Even if it isn't "happening yet", envision it. How do you accomplish this within your business?

A.  Have your office completely set up and ready to go!  Office supplies should be in place.  File folders set up.  Your desk should be organized with the tools you will need to carry out the operations of your business.

B.  Set a work schedule and stay busy during this period of time!  This means, initially, MARKETING!  Set a 2-3 hour period of time each day to devote to "running your business."  If you don't have any clients, you will be spending your time marketing your business.  You must take action to obtain reaction!

2.  Marketing Support
It is true that you have to be willing to spend money to make money.  If you have a Marketing Support Consultant who is "proven" in the industry, your chances for gaining a client faster than the guy without this type of support, increases dramatically.  Of course, it is up to you to actually "plug in" and follow the instructions of your Marketing Support Team.  If you work with a team such as MBBR, you have direct access to information and marketing tools from those who maintain a finger on the pulse of "what is working for other medical billing business owners."  It's up to you.  How soon would you like to have a client?  How soon would you like to see a return on your investment?  If you desire a quicker than average response, you should definitely consider marketing support!

3.  Peer Networking Support
You need to be involved with like-minded people.  In addition to Marketing Support, getting to know other Medical Billing Business owners will allow you to share and receive ideas from those who have already obtained clients.  Find someone who is doing what you want to be doing...  and emulate them!

4.  Know What You Are Selling!  B-E-N-E-F-I-T-S
Don't try to "sell yourself"..  this doesn't work.  If you don't believe me, stop reading this right now, turn on your TV and pay attention to the commercials!  Do you know how much money is spent on research, development and production of television commercials?  ASTRONOMICAL AMOUNTS!

I have Giga Pocket (television) on my computer..  so, just to prove my point, I'm going to turn it on and observe the first commercial I see.

The commercial was for Bayer Aspirin.  We know that Bayer Aspirin is a "pain reliever."  The commercial did not try to sell "pain

relief."  The entire commercial was based upon an older woman whose life has drastically improved since she has been taking Bayer.  The commercial showed the older woman playing basketball and being surrounded by a bunch of kids, who were hugging her and making life look absolutely fantastic for her.  What was Bayer selling?  BENEFITS!

If I told you that I could provide you with a more youthful look, a great feeling body, more time to get things accomplished in your life, a better attitude, a clear mind and happiness, would you be interested in hearing more?

Okay, I'm going to sell you a good mattress

This good mattress will allow you to sleep better at night, which will in turn eliminate body aches and a fuzzy mind.  You will be better equipped to concentrate on work and making money, take more trips, spend quality time with family...  etc. etc.  Do you see what I am getting at?  I'm not going to "sell you on the mattress", I'm going to sell you the benefits of owning the mattress!

There is a reason why expensive TV commercials sell benefits.  Plain and simple:  IT WORKS!

A "Benefit Selling" Campaign that I Created
My marketing material always reflected the benefits that someone would reap should they use my services, but I wanted to come up with something really "outside of the box."  I live in the midwest and I designed this campaign using a "stereotypical" thought process.  I asked myself, "What do physician's like to do?"  My answer was, "Golf!"

When spring came around, I mailed out brochures to physician's offices.  The front of the brochure had a picture of a golfer taking a swing.  The caption read, "Let Me Improve Your Golf Score."  I was able to kill two birds with one stone using this technique.

1st Dead Bird:  The brochure was passed directly to the doctor.  The front office staff wasn't concerned with a brochure addressed to the doctor stating that it could "improve his golf score."

2nd Dead Bird:  When the doctor opened the brochure, I was able to sell him the benefits of my services.  By contracting with me, he would be able to make more money, have less headaches, reduce overhead and spend less time in the office.  This, in turn, would allow him to spend more time on the golf course!

Did it work?  It worked extremely well!  I had physicians call me just to express their appreciation for my creativity!  And...  that brochure brought me many clients though-out my years in business.
